Research & Engaged Scholarship

As a cultural center located within an urban public research university, the Center uses a community-based approach to promote intercultural understanding and social change. Our research interests include: an exploration of the links between cultural and environmental sustainability; policies and practices that impact quality of life for African-American military veterans and their allies; historical and commemorative occasions with particular historical and cultural significance for members of Chicago’s diverse communities; culturally specific models of child-maternal health care; urban education policy and reform, and the impacts of innovation and cultural circulation on dance, music, fine arts, and other creative practices.

The AACC provides research assistantships for graduate students, as well as internships for high school students and UIC undergraduates.
